Projects
UC Summer Medical Anthropology Research Training (UC-SMART) Program
The University of California Summer Medical Anthropology Research Training (UC-SMART) Program is a six-week summer research training internship in collaboration with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and the University of Ibadan (UI) in Nigeria.
The Black Feminist Health (BFH) Collaboratory
The BFH Collaboratory is a biennial international gathering of scholars, activists, organizers, and creatives. Attendees at the gathering will have opportunities to share their research or community projects, connect with mentors, get feedback on work in progress, and network with other attendees.
New Book Lecture Series
“Writing Health Through Black Feminist Theory” is a biannual public conversation with recently published authors on the topic of advancing Black health through Black Feminist theory. We invite two authors to discuss their new or forthcoming work.
Collaborative Publications
We are currently working on a special issue for the journal, Medical Anthropology Quarterly, which follows from work discussed at our inaugural BFHSS Collaboratory in May 2021. We meet virtually to workshop articles, offer mentorship in academic publishing, and strive to make our publications open access.
Mentoring/Networking
We promote community building and information exchange through virtual meetings, in-person dinners, and bimonthly email newsletters. We work to connect collaborators with mentors in their fields.
Healing Pending Revolution: A Newsletter for the Collaboratory
Healing Pending Revolution is a declaration that global Black freedom necessitates revolution, and while we work towards liberation, we must also take time to take care of each other, to heal. This newsletter is a space to share, collaborate, celebrate, and engage with transformative visions for health and healing. We highlight ongoing research and creative work grounded in Black feminisms, as well as institutional and creative work opportunities.
Educational Materials
We are developing relevant syllabi to assist scholars, health professionals, and activists in the integration of Black feminist theory into health education and practice. One syllabus we are currently working on comes out of the New Book Lecture Series and biennial international gathering and is currently titled: Writing Health through Black Feminist Theory.
